Lucapa set to start mining high-grade diamond areas

Tuesday March 10, 2015: Lucapa Diamond Company (LOM) is ramping up production at its Lulo project in Angola, with mining about to start in three areas of known high-grade gems.

Lucapa is targeting the areas where it extracted the biggest diamonds as part of its alluvial bulk sampling program, including stones weighing 131.4 carats, 95.4 carats and 53.2 carats.

The 131-carat gem attracted global attention due to its rating as a spectacular D colour Type IIa stone.

Lucapa announced today that it was relocating the earth moving equipment to these areas to enable mining to start as soon as the wet season was finished.

Lucapa started mining in January but the operations have been restricted to river terraces because of the weather. However, the company said that despite this restriction, it had exceeded its February throughput target and the diamond recovery grades were consistent with the original bulk sample results.

In addition to the alluvial mining operation, Lucapa is testing a host of kimberlite pipes in an effort to find the primary source of its diamonds.
