Australians stranded in New Caledonia are rationing food as they wait for a way out of the troubled Pacific island territory after riots that killed six people, travellers said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is working with around 300 Australians who have registered with the government.

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said the defence force is "ready to fly" once commercial flights to the territory resume.

The riots, sparked by anger among indigenous Kanak people over a contested electoral reform planned by Paris to give more voting rights to French migrants, have resulted in burnt businesses, torched cars, looted shops and road barricades, cutting off access to medicine and food, authorities say.
