    The reason given by whom? The Australian? The prayer remains as part of senate/parliamentary proceedings at the discretion of senators/parliamentarians, not the president of the Senate. According to this document prayers have been a controversial part of parliamentary ritual dating back to the formation of parliament, due to the contradiction between the secularity of the parliament and the conduct of a religious ritual within it.
