Former prime minister Tony Abbott has signalled he will take a lead role in campaigning for the "no" vote in the same-sex marriage postal plebiscite by leaping out of the blocks with a strong denunciation of the proposal.
On Wednesday morning, the Senate rejected one last attempt by the government to pass legislation to establish a compulsory, national plebiscite to be held on November 25.

The government will now default to plan B - a $122 million, non-compulsory postal plebiscite, the result of which will be announced in November 15.

Mr Abbott, who played a pivotal role in defeating the republic referendum in 1999, has claimed same-sex marriage was political correctness which would impinge on freedom of speech and religious freedom.
