Same sex marriage: Tony Abbott won’t trick me, George Brandis says
Attorney-General George Brandis says he will not be “tricked” by Tony Abbott into fighting the same-sex marriage plebiscite on wider issues such as religious freedom.
Senator Brandis, a supporter of same-sex marriage, said this morning that the plebiscite had nothing to do with religious freedom and it was simply a question of whether people believed the Marriage Act should change.
He said that any bill to legalise gay marriage would allow religious exemptions, noting the exact nature of the protections would be debated in parliament if the Yes vote won.
Mr Abbott and Australian Christian Lobby managing director Lyle Shelton are among those who have linked the No case to a fight in protection of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.
