AGL today announced that they will no longer fund new, re-build or update any of their coal fired power stations with a view to be out of coal fired power stations by 2050.

The question is "what is going to replace them?". In NSW alone that's around 4,600MW of power they have to find from another source. That does not allow for additional growth and increased usage over that period either. The quick answer is coal gasification fired power stations (or nuclear) with the former being the safest and therefore ultimately less polluting solution in the longer term.

With our abundance of coal in the ground it surely makes more economic sense than solar or wind for that capacity ?
