Angry flood victims confront Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk at community meeting at Jambin
RESIDENTS of flood-hit Jambin and Biloela have angrily demanded answers from Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, as water company SunWater refuses to shed light on water releases from the Callide Dam, which flooded almost 400 homes.
Furious residents – still counting the cost of property and crop damage a week after their towns were flooded by rainfall from Cyclone Marcia – fear lives will be lost if dam operator SunWater does not change its flood protocols.

CYCLONE MARCIA: Multimillion damage bill
They say that their pleas to SunWater to release water in the days leading up to the arrival of Cyclone Marica fell on deaf ears.
They received warning text messages only after the automatic gates of the dam burst open on Friday night, forcing them to evacuate in darkness.
Yesterday, dozens angrily confronted Ms Palaszczuk at a community meeting at the Jambin Hotel.
The hotel itself was inundated with about 400mm of water.
Like many residents, the pub’s owner and lifelong Jambin local Peter Wilkie and his wife Sue are questioning why water was not released from Callide before its gates opened when water levels reached dangerous levels.
“The dam was already 80 per cent full and they should have started letting water out two days before the cyclone hit,” Mr Wilkie said.
“It’s just pure arse nobody was killed, the water came down that quick.”
Jambin couple Jeff and Nicole Nairn said their house was “worthless” after being flooded in 2013 and again last week.
“I may as well give the bank manager the keys and tell him he can have it,” Mr Nairn said.
In Biloela, the Zischke family home was among those flooded as a “tidal wave” of water swamped their street.
“What’s the good of putting the bloody gates on the dam if you’re not going to use them?” family patriarch Ken Zischke, 76, said.
“They’re there to protect people’s lives.”
A SunWater spokeswoman said information requested by The Courier-Mail yesterday – on issues like dam levels before the rain and if there was a reluctance to let irrigation water go sooner – would form part of an independent review ordered by Ms Palaszczuk.
“The appropriate place for further information to be provided is via the government review,” she said.
“SunWater will fully participate in that review and it is inappropriate to speculate at this stage.”
A SunWater document on management during floods says releasing water before a major rainfall event provides no benefits downstream in moderate or major events.
