Irrigators warned quick change possible in allocations

Goulburn Murray Water says irrigators should be optimistic about next season's water allocations.

The Prime Minister last week warned of possible zero allocations to farmers on the Murray-Darling system, unless there is substantial autumn rain.

But Goulburn-Murray Water chief executive Russell Cooper says while allocations might be zero at the start of the season, the situation could change quickly.

"It's alarmed them a little too much because we know we get the major flows of water during the months of July, August, September, October, so none of us can make it rain in those times, but that's when we expect the major in-flows to come," he said.

"So we can't judge the system in terms of what will happen then, at this stage of the season, we have to expect we'll get some reasonable rains in in those particular months."
