In the USA it also means a distance measure, but here it means a machine that measures usage, for instance.
It should have been 'metre'.
Spellcheck could be the to blame. at least initially anyway, but the author should have been aware of the error and corrected it before finalising it for release.
It's funny though; the error attracted me to the announcement. Otherwise, I would not have noticed it.
