Good onya BMD. That explains why I was unfamiliar with the term. I was however able, with appropriate mental gymnastics able to convince myself that it could pertain to ion channel activity. Clearly, I know little about viruses. In my days at uni within our microbiology course there was pretty much no virology. I do know a good deal about ion channels however. It might interest you to know (if you don't know already) that one of my contemporaries at uni studying under Peter Gage, worked with and indeed was a coauthor on a piece of work that brought the Nobel prize to Messrs Neher and Sakmann for perfecting the patch clamp technique which was essential for the study of single ion channel activity.
