I think (Occam's razor) they knew and stay out of the way until artisanal are done with the area and have mined all the gold. See recent video of PL at active artisanal on their lease and notice his hushed tones.
Presume it will be the same if they decide to strip the shallow portion of any resource MKG has proved up.
