"oil/NG formed from ancient organic materials 100+ million years ago. The organics produced NH4 then went through many millions of years of chemical reactions under heat and compression, then slowly became petroleum products. During the process N (nitrogen gas) was released from oxidation and found its way through micro fractures in the rock formations then escaped from the petroleum reservoirs. The migration and infiltration of N by the geological movements in the past hundred million years bled off most the N from oil/NG reservoirs.
If a geological trap of petroleum hydrocarbons is so tightly sealed, then the petroleum forming by-product N could not escape. The Bluff well had 41 hours of high pressure N flow and increasing without formation water, at a high flow rate of 8 million CF/Day with 20/64" choke, is very impressive. IF, there is an oil leg (Nitrogen is often associated with very light crude oil and NG) down dip this zone, the formation pressure could be very high and hot. The well will be shut-in for 10 days, there may be another surprise when the well is re-opened"
