Phil, the problem will always persists in our capitalistic world where the profit means everything for companies, especially with those that can dominate markets, if there is not enough scrutiny by the government bodies, and push to put moral standards above the profitability. But on the other side, if company becomes to big, it is usually the case that it will be corrupted based (legal corruption system everyone knows but until most 'participated' are happy with it, will exist) on mutually beneficial relationships with the body officials, including the lobby groups.
