Mali president signs new mining code in bid to raise govt stake (msn.com)
Can't say that I blame them. The country needs to pull itself up by its bootstraps, and the only strap they've got is the mining industry.
Could it possibly be that this is what the recent "letter from the Malian government" to Leo is all about? I very much doubt it, but it would neatly explain why both Leo and Firefinch got letters. "This is what we intend to do. Don't tell anyone until we announce it." Again, I very much doubt it. It's all about Morila, imo. I just wonder how they intend to go from 10% to 35% (because if any project warrants a 35% share, it's Goulamina).
I don't think we'll be seeing any long-term mining investments in Mali now. Not only are the terms worse, the government is demonstrably less trustworthy. Will exploration simply cease?
