Synthetic graphite is not cheaper to produce, graphitisation in a lab is about double the cost of derivation of natural graphite. Additionally the emissions from heating up carbon-rich oil produces 2-3x the emmisions. Seeing that most countries are looking to reduce their carbon footprint in the long term, natural graphite will overturn the production of synthetic in the near future. This is especially the case when we run out of oil, where synthetic carbon can no longer be produced in the far future (2050-2060).
