Ideally, before running logs one would drill to Total Depth (TD) defined by:

1) Drill completely through the entire thickness of the suspected reservoir* + ~30m (for logging tools**). *If they are getting HC shows, they would likely drill until there are no more shows + the extra ~30m deeper than the base of last show. **This extra depth can vary quite a bit due to what combination of logging tools are run. Typically, one wants a complete set of logs across the entire reservoir, so you need the extra depth to do so.

OR

2) Call TD when it appears there’s no reason (or no money) to drill further.

OR

3) Drill to a contractual TD - could be with drilling company (not likely in this case), partners (possible) or government (possible).

Then, they condition hole/mud for logging (can take some time, ~one to a few days), POOH, then run logs (ideally, logging only takes a few hours).

Logs would be quickly evaluated on-site, and the decision would be made to run further tests (sidewall cores, drill stem tests, etc.), or drill further, or call TD, and then run casing or plug the well.
