Hasidism, sometimes spelled Chassidism, and also known as Hasidic Judaism (Ashkenazi Hebrew: חסידות Ḥăsīdus, [χasiˈdus]; originally, "piety"), is a religious movement within Judaism that arose as a spiritual revival movement in Poland and contemporary Western Ukraine (then Poland), during the 18th century, and spread rapidly throughout Eastern Europe. Today, most of those affiliated with the movement, known as hassidim, reside in Israel and in the United States.
Following a Biblical commandment not to shave the sides of one's face (Leviticus 19:27), male members of most Hasidic groups wear long,uncut sidelocks called payot (or peyes).
A similar trait of males is depicted in the frescoes recovered from Akrotiri on the Aegean island of Thera, which like Pompei had been buried beneath tens of metres of volcanic ash from the late seventeenth eruption of the volcano underlying the island.

Since the Hebrew Bible declared that the Philistines came from Kaptor, most scholars have postulated that Kaptor = Krete. If this is the case then it may be that the Hasidic Jews are emulating traits of the European Philistines. However KPT could also refer to the delta of Egypt (Greek Aiguptos), which the Hyksos Philistines captured in around 1800 BCE before being expelled from thence by the Egyptians in around 1550 BCE, whereupon the Hyksos retreated to Palestine.This was some 400 hundred before the supposed Biblical exodus.
As the dominant city-state on Krete in the second millennium BCE was known in Greek as Knossos, Jewish synogogues and the parliament of Israel is called KNST = Knesset (Luke 4:44) which suggest yet another emulation of the Philistines.
