What did his fugal investment strategy really achieve - apart from enriching a "substitute teacher from California"? At face value $500 a month doesn't seem much of a return.
I suspect that the more interest story involves the state of mind of this investor and the comfort he derived from having a reserve hidden under the floor boards. Such intangible returns can't really be measures in dollars.
This may explain in part why I can't resolve an argument with a gold bug.
