The overnight results of Ireland's referendum on gay marriage shows all too clearly how unrepresentative our own politics are back here.
Poll after poll in Australia has revealed that Australians favour gay marriage with an overwhelming majority of those being polled in favour yet both major political parties have failed to deliver this to their constituencies. All over the world governments are recognising that this ridiculous anomaly needs rectification yet here in Australia, as in many things, our politicians fail to recognise the will of the people.
What does this tell us? That this country is governed by a small but immensely powerful conservative clique comprised of the churches, big business and the unions. When we can rout out this unrepresentative swill, Australia may just revert back to being a democracy.
