This is a short (44 wagon) AZJ coal train in NSW's Hunter Valley.

Its destination is a coal-fired power station south of Newcastle that helps to keep Australia's lights, air fryers and electric cars and buses operating;

Most coal trains operating to/from Newcastle's port are c.90 wagons so this one's a baby.

The two tracks on the left are 'the coal lines' while the ones on the right (with East Maitland station visible having an island platform) are used by Sydney Trains' Hunter Valley passenger railcars to/from Telerah and less frequently Dungog on the Brisbane/north coast rail line, and to Scone/Muswellbrook on the Werris Creek line, as well as the daily 'Northern Tablelands Express' to/from Armidale and separately, Moree, along with general freights such as intermodals (container carrying), cement and not forgetting the all-important golden grains.
