As long as Russia's economic interests are protected ASSAD is not essential to Russia. A transitional government is being arranged and the aim is probably to remove Assad if not completely in a sideways move, maybe a token role.
Malcolm Turnbull on that issue is just following the script constructed by the majors, USA and Russia.
