    An oldie, but not true. Thermal expansion/ contraction for brass is nineteen millionths of length per degree Celsius. So if the plate was 1 meter square, the sides would contract nineteen thousandths of a millimeter per degree. Do the arithmetic. Also the iron balls would also be contracting, albeit at a lesser rate.
