    The Coalition did make a poor choice in electing Bronwyn Bishop to the position of Speaker. Not because she is not competent to do the job, but because she has been a figure of fun from the opposition, and some of the general public, for many years.
    She is very much in contrast with, e.g. Harry Jenkins, who would have been perceived as a largely neutral, inoffensive figure always.

    So she was always going to have an uphill job imo.

    None of that excuses what seemed like a deliberate and unbelievably childish tactic from the opposition today to just create mayhem. It goes to the whole atmosphere that is parliament at present, ie a complete disregard for the national interest and a total focus on being as obstructive as possible.

    It's just very, very depressing and disheartening.
