It's not all that much of a mystery. Patents are written to cover as much ground as possible so that the owner of the patent can claim in the widest context. Gilead envisage that their drug might be used in conjunction with other drugs and wish to cover that contingency in their patent. Hence the patent application includes just about any drug they can think of that might be used. It gives them no right to any of Biotron's intellectual property.
