somehow markets are pretty good at anticipating such events well in advance, hence the rerate can be slow or the consolidation lengthy and deliberate while some entity loads up.
The big liquidity events are infrequent with the odds of being in one akin to winning the lottery it feels. So as mentioned you can scan for setups which have a high chance of being one of these large trend moves. The ASX doesnt give out many of these opportunities sadly but when it does it pays to be in it. I got lucky with FND this year (accompanied by a great many stocks that fizzed out for small losses), and that alone out performed my entire performance for last year I think.
FND was a constructive setup and I'm watching several similar ones now. What I've not done well in the past with is background market conditions. A great setup in a poor market has to contend with low investor enthusiasm and hence we see a lot of failed breakouts.
