Jennifer Marohasy is feeling optimistic at Great Barrier Reef.

Location specific temperature data indicates that this last summer has not been particularly warm considering the last nine summers. For example, the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) water temperature data for John Brewer reef, as measured at a depth of 9 metres from February 1, 2016, to February 7, 2024, shows temperatures cycling with the seasons. It does not show temperatures increasing.
This is just one location, and one relatively short data series. And it is consistent with what I observed when I visited this and four other coral reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef earlier this month. Corals in the central region of the Great Barrier Reef appear to have been more impacted by Tropical Cyclone Kirrily, than warmer than average water temperatures this summer.
It was nevertheless possible to find beautiful corals, and so many fishes, once you to got down to 9 metres. (Photograph taken at the front of John Brewer reef on April 4, 2024.)
