If its too hot on the GBR - how do the reefs flourish near the equator?
Most coral reefs can be found near the equator because of the abundant sunlight and warm water temperature. Most coral reefs (excluding deep-sea coral reefs), more specifically the algae important to the existence of a coral reef, need sunlight for photosynthesis and only thrive in warm temperature (25-27 Celcius). Tropical coral reefs thrive with a lot of sunlight and warmer temperatures. They therefore tend to grow in clean, shallow waters of up to 70 metres (230 feet) deep, nearer to the equator. These shallow water coral reefs have a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae.
