Many of those business's left Australia because the high A$ over many years made it too expensive to export from here.
That was due to the mining boom, which has almost destroyed manufacturing.
The miners also were making so much money they didn't mind paying very high wages and that inspired wages to grow rapidly right across the country because other employers were losing their skilled workers to mining.
