Its not as silly as it sounds. Just look at lithium ion batteries. The new wave of batters use sodium and no lithium or cobalt. Who'd have thought that a few years ago?
With a supposed world shortage and high demand for silica sand, I have no doubt that technology will come into play here at some point.
