I recently got solar panels. There is a company in Oz that say the panels are made here. In fact they are only assembled here. For the exact same brand panels and inverter, the local company wanted $9k. I paid $3.5k. There is already a heavy subsidy for solar panels and it would be worse if made here. The difference is purely labour cost.

If we make panels in Oz, it will be like the car manufacturing industry where subsidies were way over the top. $1b will just be a drop in the ocean. We can't compete against a few dollars per day labour.
