Looming Hicks charges no surprise, father says

The father of Australian Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks says it would be wrong for Prime Minister John Howard to take any credit for speeding up the legal processing of his son.

Terry Hicks says he is not surprised by reports that his son may be formally charged today ahead of his military trial.

Mr Howard says he urged President George W Bush in Washington this week to ensure that the matter be brought to its finality.

But Mr Hicks says his son's legal team had been expecting charges to be laid around now anyway.

"This revelation of John Howard's is not new to us," he said.

"It's probably new to him but... I think John Howard's just jumping on the band wagon along [with] a lot of these things now because of the forthcoming elections.

"He's trying to make himself a good fellow over this."

Mr Hicks says he would welcome contact with his son soon, after reports his son may be allowed a phone call once he has been officially charged.
