Did God know? I would think so, he's omniscient. But we have free-will.
Some of God's best lessons present themselves in nature (designed by him, from him). Man cannot receive enlightenment without knowing darkness. We see this pattern starting from the most basic forms in our plane of existence. Atoms/energy (both electric and magnetic) require positive and negative polarity to exist. We can continue up the scale to light and darkness, day and night, male and female, good and bad, etc. God leaves lots of clues in his creations. We just need to find them.
