FWIW, IMO your take is unassailable and they are indeed snookered. However, they remain unrepentant and steadfast in faith that their meaning is the correct one.
I do hope God extends mercy and all those poor billions of snookered "Christians" will not suffer just because of what they were brought up to believe even though it's misguided.
After all, God is at least partly to blame because of lack of clarity in passing on the details of His infallible word.
Interestingly, how Jesus seems to have failed to notice he was actually God the Son rather than the Son of God is a mystery, and why it was not proclaimed unequivocally by all the disciples is also odd. Pretty important detail.
