Interestingly, how Jesus seems to have failed to notice he was actually God the Son rather than the Son of God is a mystery, and why it was not proclaimed unequivocally by all the disciples is also odd. Pretty important detail.
You mention they were brought up to believe they were following the correct one and yet quite pain and simple, the answer is pretty much in these few words of yours here.
IMO then, for someone to then suggest, OH it wasn't my fault I had it wrong, is pretty laughable and negligence.
