POG at that time was in the hundreds, but the insurance companies only paid $42/oz as official figures were/ are. After several court hearings the matter was confirmed to the advantage of the insurance company. Further on from that, supposing Germany, for example, insist on their gold. The US decline, and pay out Germany, or whomever at $42/oz. The US may have the law on their side.
