    A bit surprised - I thought this was one of those things that was taken out of context, however, upon further checking, taking animals as pets appears to be a problem in Islam according to many religious community elders - the majority of articles that I have found on Islamic sites indicate a problem with keeping pets.

    It unfolds in the above dialogue that while keeping pets like dogs is not forbidden in Islam, it is considered to be an offensive act.

    An additional concern by those who have pets (in the above thread) indicates that some are looked down upon and even shunned by some of their fellow Muslims if they have pets (such as dogs).

    So again, a sign that this religion is suffering from two serious problems:

    - the word of allah is still taken literally by many
    - the religion has not grown up over the years in terms of commonsense applications of the word of allah by its leaders

    The ball is in the court of the "moderates" and their leaderships to steer this religion into calm waters.
