FRANKFURT (Dow Jones) MAN Truck & Bus wants to develop and test fully-electric trucks together with the Austrian Consortium Council for Sustainable Logistics (CNL). A corresponding agreement was signed at the MAN plant in Steyr, the parent company Volkswagen announced.
By the end of 2017 nine fully electric-powered MAN distribution trucks would be tested by some food retailers, the Stiegl brewery, the automotive manufacturer Magna Steyr and three logistics companies. The vehicles are produced in Steyr.
From the end of 2018 onwards, the production of a first small series is planned. At the beginning of 2021 MAN is going to start the serial production of electric trucks for urban distribution. From the end of 2019, MAN would also begin the series production of fully electric-powered city buses.
Joachim Drees, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus and MAN SE, said: "Electric mobility is the future of freight transport in the city." Through the development partnership with CNL, the company is now gaining valuable practical experience "that will help us become a leading manufacturer of eTrucks". The results would also be valuable for development projects within the Volkswagen Truck & Bus Group.
According to the CNL, the initiative is a one-of-a-kind initiative: 15 of the largest Austrian companies in the fields of trade, logistics service providers and production have joined forces to jointly take steps in the area of sustainable logistics. The CNL is anchored at the Center for Global Change and Sustainability at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna.
