There is a paper that establishes that eastern north america and Europe was subjected to a wind pattern change in the 70s. Humid moist air was driven from the mid pacific as opposed to the normally western region. The duration of this event has greatly contributed to European temperatures. That phenomenon is linked to the meridonial turnover in the 70s.
Also worth noting that the NAO changed it from a deep negative to a strong phase. For which it is still in. All be it it is weakening now. I will have to find it.
