A coal-fired power plant development is set to be the biggest project yet under the bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and India.

The agreement reached is to build a 1320 MW coal power plant at Rampal of Bagerhat, near the Sundarbans, Bangladesh.

The $1.49bn contract was awarded by Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (BIFPLC) to India’s state-owned firm Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL).

BIFPLC is a 50-50 joint venture between India's state-owned utility National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Bangladesh Power Development Board.

In response to some protest from environmental quarters, BIFPCL managing director Ujjwal Kanti Bhattacharya said: "We respect the concern of the people of Bangladesh, we are set to maintain the maximum environmental standards for the plant."

Backed by funding from Indian Exim Bank, the project construction is expected to commence in three to four months and will be completed in 2019.

2,000 MW coal-fired power plant begins construction in Malaysia

    International Digital Editor

Construction work has started on the proposed $2.6bn Jimah East Power (JEP) plant project in Jimah, Port Dickson, south of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

Energy Business Review reports that the 2,000 MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plant will feature two greenfield power units at the Port Dickson strategic site.

The plant is key to the security of power supply in Peninsula Malaysia and its power will be sold to electric power company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

TNB owns 70 per cent stake in the project through the acquisition of Edra Global Energy’s stake in Jimah East Power (JEP), a joint venture company formed by Mitsui and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) to construct and operate the ultra-super critical coal-fired power plant.

The first unit of the project is scheduled to commence in June 2019 followed by second unit in December 2019.

In 2015, Hyundai Engineering awarded two contracts to Jacobs Engineering to provide civil and structural design services for the balance of plant facilities and the cooling water intake and discharge system for Jimah East power project.
