Yeah i'm not holding my breath for fusion, but it's a fact that we can do it already, just currently cost more energy then it produces.
In regards to batteries i don't think even our currently lithium ion battery tech is good enough for off grid, new tech needs to be invented. to go off grid with would probably want a battery about the size of a Tesla power wall but with 10 times the capacity.
A pipe dream i know, but look how far we have come in 50 years, who knows.
