You are right about the inability to commercialize, monetize....no "startup culture" (that has been embedded into the society and its culture and industry), like Israel...no VC industry, no Angel Investors, no (historic) close co-operation between Higher Education and business....au contraire..I can tell U stories having once worked at U of MEL Comp s Sci Department.....anathema to "commerce".... They taught "Computer SCIENCE"... "we don't train programmers"! straight from the Prof's mouth to my ears.
Just compare with Stanford U, in CA.....if a kid has a good idea, they'll tell him to drop out, go for it, and presumably support it, with $$$ (for an early stake-holding). I doubt we see that here.
