Detailed Morphological Analysis Provides Further Confirmation of Superior Hepatoprotective Activity
On 28 September, 2004, Solagran announced the results of a trial conducted in St Petersburg at the Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry in conjunction with the Institute of Influenza. This trial showed Bioeffective R to have superior hepatoprotective properties to Essentiale Forte – one of the most widely used hepatoprotectors. This was evidenced by Bioeffective R’s impact on key enzyme activity and the rate at which it restored the liver’s protein synthesising function.
The Directors of Solagran are pleased to announce that detailed morphological analysis of the internal organs of the animals used in that trial (undertaken using a combination of light and electron microscopy at the Institute of Influenza) has confirmed these initial findings, giving further weight to the Company’s view that Bioeffective R is an outstanding hepatoprotective substance that also has the capacity to rejuvenate an otherwise healthy liver.
Following exposure to a liver damaging toxin (carbon tetrachloride) detailed analyses of liver cells were conducted after 7, 14 and 21 days of treatment with either Bioeffective R or Essentiale Forte. Electron microscopy at magnifications of 6-12,000x, and light microscopy at 120x, revealed that:
1. Carbon tetrachloride actively damages cellular membranes in the liver. This leads to destruction of mitochondrial and rough endoplasmic reticular networks, disruption of the liver’s protein-synthesising function, and accumulation of lipids in the cells together with cellular lipid dystrophy.
2. Bioeffective R assists in re-establishing normal cellular structure in the liver and in rebuilding the liver’s protein synthesising function. Bioeffective R does this by facilitating the formation of protein synthesising complexes in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and in the mitochondria, which enables increased accumulation of glycogen.
3. When compared with Essentiale Forte, administration of Bioeffective R resulted in earlier and greater accumulation of glycogen in the cytoplasm of damaged hepatocytes, and in a decrease in the number of mitochondrial lipid-containing vacuoles.
4. Neither light nor electron microscopy revealed any negative effect of Bioeffective R on the kidneys. After 21 days the kidneys recovered their normal function.
The research teams from both institutions also noted that animals treated with Bioeffective R had a better appearance than those treated with Essentiale Forte and those in the control groups. They were less aggressive, recovered faster after exposure to the damaging effects of carbon tetrachloride injection, and had faster healing at the injection site.
As indicated in our announcement dated 28 September, the Company expects to receive the final results of an associated study of the effect of Bioeffective R on brain functions within the next several weeks.
