This is the performance of gold vs S&P 500 including dividends. Gold has outperformed the S&P over this period but gold miners have see very poor returns (negative since 2006 as the second chart illustrates). To achieve a comparable return to gold one has to be very very selective in the gold miners one invests in and that is very difficult to achieve over a long period.
