I guess it depends on your ideas of 'success'. On the surface yes the SP is doing well, and that's great for investors.
But I guess as an engineer I look at things a bit differently? In the last 10-15 years Qantas has closed its heavy maintenance and engine overhaul facilities in Sydney and Melbourne. What was once a world leader in aviation engineering, now sends a lot of work overseas to inferior organisations. Some argue to a certain degree, QF has lost an element of control over its aircraft and component maintenance.
Granted that is not uncommon practice for airlines these days, but the systematic stripping down of what was one of the best airline engineering departments in the world is disappointing.
Lets face it, Qantas is just 'another airline' these days, but it still does bath in the glory of its safety record. So it could be argued that outsourcing one of your greatest assets may not be a wise move?
But these days investors don't really care about that, until there is an accident or incident. Hopefully this will never happen, but if you study human factors and resource management, it is inevitable, even for Qantas.
