The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association did a cost analysis that showed much of the work could have been done onshore, for the same cost or less, and to a higher standard.
But management had already decided to send it offshore, so they could meet KPIs and get their bonuses.
Many Qantas workers have taken wage freezes, and entered into enterprise bargaining agreements to try and keep jobs onshore.
But it seems managers bonuses are more important than maintaining aircraft onshore?
Qantas is building a hangar in Los Angeles to do maintenance on A380 aircraft where they can utilise cheap manpower from Mexico.
Other aircraft are sent to the Philippines were manpower is also cheap, but quality is poor.
Engines were sent to China for overhaul, but the reliability of those engines suffered severely.
So in the end, you get what you pay for, a cheaper repair, but a loss of reliability, not a good thing in aviation.
Many of these overseas maintained aircraft end up back in Sydney, and are grounded until Qantas engineers can fix the problems not fixed, or created overseas. Then management do a study and try to tell the Qantas engineers that their efficiency is below that of the overseas repairer??? Any wonder many have retired and left the industry, because they are fed up with brainless managers.
