Mr Dixon's warning of profit downgrade is timely and in the long term may be fortuitous for QANTAS.
At the same time as one of the worst periods in civil aviation is taking place Mr Dixon is making a grab for Air NZ.
QANTAS stated 29th April that it will make a written submission to the ACCC for reconsideration of the QANTAS / AIR NZ Alliance.
Mr Dixon's profit warning reinforces the momentum of his argument that 'Qantas and Air New Zealand are not immune from the ongoing problems and changes facing the global aviation industry'.
The benefits reported to shareholders is that the Alliance will be EPS accretive 2003/4 onwards and have pre-tax synergies of between NZ$330M and NZ$450M per annum by third year.
