There is a petition circulated by Change.Org representing various green organisations who are opposed to Fracking in WA and are endeavouring to influence political parties at the next WA State Election. I am reliably informed that the WA Labour Party will implement a policy of banning all gas development and exploration as the State Labour parties have in Victoria and in other states. Here is a transcript of the petition:
"Thousands of us have joined John Butler in telling the unconventional gas and fracking industry: Frack Off! Now let’s tell our local Members of Parliament (MPs) to say no to this dangerous and accident prone industry too - for threatening our families’ health, precious water, world-famous environment, and farming and wine-growing regions.
Here in WA we need:
A statewide moratorium (temporary ban) on unconventional gas and fracking. This must protect WA for five years while a public consultation and enquiry determines whether the industry is safe and welcome.
An immediate permanent ban in sensitive areas such as National Parks, productive farmland and water catchments.
The right for farmers, leaseholders and Traditional Owners to say no and refuse gas exploration and production on their land.
Victoria, Tasmania and the Northern Territory have joined France, New York, Scotland, Germany and others in adopting bans and moratoriums on fracking. But what about WA’s precious water, farms and environment? What about people like Mid West mango farmers Rod and Annette Copeland and Kimberley Traditional Owner Micklo Corpus, who have been fighting for years to protect their land from fracking?
It’s all eyes on WA politicians ahead of our State Election, which will be held next March. Right now - believe it or not - they are listening. Let’s collectively make our voices heard and ask our MPs, “will you put a hold on all unconventional gas activities here while the public and experts have their say, and protect our safe water supply?”
The information you provide today will be collected to help:
• Environs Kimberly • Frack Free Future • Gasfields Free SW WA • Lock the Gate • The Wilderness Society WA
These five organisations are working together on the anti-fracking campaign. They may contact you to tell you about their organisation, send you invitations to events or meeting and promote volunteering or fundraising opportunities. Such contact may be made through, and your information shared with, your local campaign centres, trusted third parties and our service providers. More information:
