Subsidies are used to help industries to get established . Not to reward inefficiency and poor performance.
The fossil companies could've chosen to clean their act up decades ago. They could've chosen to invest in clean energy and still own the energy market. lnstead they spent that money on fake news campaigns.

The new better technology is displacing the old one .
Better, cheaper, cleaner, more secure , more flexible, fairer , more abundant etc .
