Due to the nature of healthcare in Australia and an ageing population the health care costs of Australia are only going to increase. Further, 40% of the population over 65 will have one chronic illness, 26% will have two, 15% will have 3, 5% will have four and lastly 2% will have 5. GP's are the frontline in chronic illness management. Further, a GP tax will actually have a negative desired effect on our health cost budget. People will stop visiting GP's for their chronic illness management and will instead need to visit an acute care setting once things become untreatable. Thus burdening the health system more and costing the taxpayers an increased amount. Remember, we do not want people in hospitals for the fear of contracting infections and increasing there hospital care needs and stay.
