    See, this attitude is perhaps the most poisonous in all of modern public debate. Politicians, lawyers and most of the lay public (particularly those of the conservative variety) operate on the court-of-law/high-school-debate model: "here's my position. Now I will cherry-pick facts and quotes to support it, while rubbishing everything that contradicts it."

    To any real scientist, this mindset is not only alien, but abhorrent. The scientist's drive is to find out the truth in their chosen field. That is, to weigh up all the facts, crunch all the numbers, then report their findings. Call it altruism, call it curiosity, call it practicality, call it simple professionalism - I don't care what you call it, but that is the scientist's job, and what you're accusing them of would actually be the worst form of academic misconduct. And you're accusing every. Single. One.
